The Perfect Excuse to Do Nothing But Watch Movies

A rainy day is not a problem. It's an opportunity. There's a particular kind of pleasure in being indoors while rain hits the windows — especially with a great film queued up and nowhere to be. The right movie makes the experience complete.

This list covers different moods, because not every rainy day calls for the same kind of film. Whether you want comfort, adventure, tears, or laughs — there's something here for you.

Cosy & Comforting

1. Amelie (2001)

Jean-Pierre Jeunet's whimsical French masterpiece about a shy Parisian woman who secretly improves the lives of people around her. Warm, witty, and visually inventive — pure cinematic comfort food.

2. Paddington 2 (2017)

Don't be put off by its family label. Paddington 2 is a genuinely excellent film — funny, heartfelt, and technically impressive. It was briefly the highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes. A perfect rainy afternoon watch.

3. Julie & Julia (2009)

Two parallel stories of women finding themselves through cooking — one in 1950s Paris, one in modern New York. Meryl Streep's Julia Child is one of the great screen performances. Best watched with snacks.

Gripping Thrillers

4. Gone Girl (2014)

David Fincher's ice-cold thriller about a missing wife and her increasingly suspicious husband. Brilliantly constructed, with a twist that will make your jaw drop. Absolutely riveting from start to finish.

5. Knives Out (2019)

A murder mystery that gleefully plays with the conventions of the genre. Witty, clever, and thoroughly entertaining — with a star-studded cast clearly having the time of their lives.

6. Prisoners (2013)

A tense, morally complex thriller about two girls who go missing and the father who takes justice into his own hands. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal give career-best performances.

Feel-Good & Uplifting

7. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

An underrated gem. A daydreaming office worker embarks on a real adventure across the globe. Visually stunning, genuinely heartwarming, and surprisingly moving.

8. Chef (2014)

Jon Favreau writes, directs, and stars in this feel-good story of a chef who loses his restaurant job and starts a food truck. Beautiful food, great music, and a warm, relaxed energy throughout.

Epic Adventures

9. The Princess Bride (1987)

A fairy tale adventure with wit, romance, and swordplay. Quotable, charming, and beloved for good reason — a film that works for everyone, every time.

10. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

A grumpy man and his foster child go on the run through the New Zealand bush. Taika Waititi's film is funny, moving, and utterly delightful. One of the most charming films of the 2010s.

For When You Want a Good Cry

11. Up (2009)

Pixar's adventure about a elderly widower who ties balloons to his house and flies to South America — accompanied by an enthusiastic young scout. The opening ten minutes are famous for a reason.

12. Manchester by the Sea (2016)

A devastating, beautifully crafted drama about grief and guilt. Casey Affleck's performance is one of the most powerful in recent American cinema. Not easy viewing — but profoundly rewarding.
